With a light-hearted (some can even say over used) premise of a romantic triangle, the Book of Life manages to bring a different take on it and teaches kids - and adults - about Mexican culture. It’s a great animation movie, with great characters, great music, great design… In general, this was one great movie.

The Book of Life is amazing—One of the most imaginative, joyous and memorable animated films I’ve ever seen. If you love animation, great storytelling, charming characters and quirky humor, check out this movie as soon as you can; It’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.

Although the film deals very much with death—and you’ll probably tear up a few times before it’s over—It manages to stay fun, unpretentious, lively, loving and surprising from start to finish.

It’s the most original and entertaining animated film I’ve seen since How to Train Your Dragon…I LOVE this movie!!!

The movie starts with a school bus arriving at the museum for the last tour of the day. Thing is, that bus if filled with “detention kids”. To help her colleague, a beautiful guide appears, claiming that she can handle the situation (clearly proved right away). The kids follow her, but not to the museum entrance. She leads them to a secret passage, saying that they were special and needed a different tour. In the passage, the time of our story is set. It’s November second, El Dia de Muertos. The guide takes the kids to see the Book of Life, and only then our characters are set.
La Muerte, a beautiful woman, rules the Land of the Remembered. She is nice and loves all mankind. On the other hand there is Xibalba, a trickster. He is the ruler of the Land of the Forgotten, a place the dead go after no one remembers them. To those who know Greek mythology, both lands can be compared to the Elysium and the Fields of Punishment.
Both characters are celebrating the Day of the Dead, years ago. Xibalba is begging La Muerte to be the ruler of the Land of the Remembered, saying that his kingdom is cold and sad. It is established that he had lost a bet, thus why he currently rules the Land of the Forgotten. Xibalba, knowing his woman, decides to make another bet. And so both decide to bet on the most ancient type of conflict: two friends, in love with the same woman.
One thing that I particularly loved about this movie was the fact that there is no villain. Yes, Xibalba does cheat to win the wager. But he never denied Manolo - our main character - what he wanted. Xibalba reminds me a lot of Hades: he isn’t bad, he’s just tired of living alone in a sad place, so he does all he can to escape it. It is proved by the end of the movie that both - La Muerte and Xibalba - were guilty for the events that followed their bet. And both still love each other by the end of it. They’re just immortals bored with their lives.
Back to our characters, we have Joaquín - perfectly voiced by Channing Tatum - the town hero. His father held this title before dying, and he even said in the movie that he had a “big shadow” to follow. He is Xibalba’s champion, and receives a medal that would make him invincible.
Next we have Maria, voiced by Zoe Saldana. She is a strong woman since she was a child. Her father, the mayor of the city, sent her away to Spain to learn how to be a “proper lady” since she was a tomboy, always making a mess in the town. When she comes back, she is more educated, both in books and fighting. She doesn’t like how women are considered objects to their husbands - a revolutionary thought for that time - and claims “no one owns her”.

Finally, Manolo, voiced by Diego Luna. Coming from a family of bullfighters, his father desires that he keeps the family tradition. However, all Manolo wants to do is be a singer. He is headstrong, fights for his ideals, and is incredibly courageous. He is La Muerte’s champion, and like Xibalba she gave him a gift: the blessing that he would remain gentle and have a brave heart.
The movie’s pacing is great, going back and forward all the time, using this dynamic to its favor. The fact that it has three different worlds makes it easier to go from a heavier subject to a lighter one. Specially in darker scenes, when it realizes it is a “kids” movie (kids in commas because I don’t believe animation should be considered that nowadays) it quickly moves to the storyteller - the museum guide - using the student’s comments to light up the story.
Entertaining from beginning to end, the Book of Life has great humorous scenes but also heart-breaking ones. Interesting characters with amazing designs, an incredible outtake on the classic love triangle plot and an ending most would not expect. Definitely a movie you can’t miss.
